Reception

The reception area is mainly devoted to the history of the museum, including the remarkable regulations dating from 1898 and bearing Merghelynck's beautiful signature. It is striking that residents of the city were only allowed to visit the museum with the express permission of the owner. “Speelreizigers” (tourists), on the other hand, did not need this permission. They were kindly requested to leave their riding crops and weapons at the door. Although the elite of the time spoke exclusively French, these regulations are bilingual.
