Sculpture group with playful scene

  • Object

A noble young lady wearing a hoop skirt and a tall wig sits in a beautifully decorated sedan chair. Her two footmen, smartly dressed in breeches, waistcoats, tailcoats and flat wigs, are taking a break. One of them, with a small dog at his feet, takes the opportunity to take a drink. The young lady is being addressed in an obviously friendly manner by a fashionably dressed clergyman. The suggestion is clear: this is flirting.
This frivolous scene in Meissen porcelain stands on a chest of drawers in the antechamber of the “lady's room”. It is a typical “scène galante” that was very popular among the upper classes in the 18th century. It is not unjustified to describe that period as “frivolous” and “gallant”. Sexual morals became somewhat more relaxed, which was expressed in erotic stories, naughty prints... and in such gallantries.
